Especially before major holidays such as Christmas or Easter, marzipan is often used to refine small or large treats. Especially in winter, marzipan potatoes, dominoes and Co. are very popular. From time to time, the feasting of sweet seductions is also allowed. Nevertheless, keep in mind that marzipan is not exactly healthy due to its ingredients and high calorie content.
What is marzipan?
Marzipan consists primarily of almonds, powdered sugar and rose water. In the production, a distinction is generally made between marzipan and marzipan raw material. Here, the raw mass is the basic building block from which all other marzipan products are produced by adding further ingredients (especially powdered sugar).
The quality of the finished products is defined in particular by the ratio of sugar and marzipan raw material. The less sugar added, the higher the quality of the product. For example, Lübecker-Marzipan consists of at least 90 percent marzipan raw material, while other types of marzipan must at least have a content of 70 percent.
However, for a product to carry the name marzipan, the ratio of marzipan paste to sugar must be at least 1: 1. The quality of the product can often be recognized by the color: Good marzipan is more yellowish, the more sugar is added, the lighter it gets.
Marzipan: healthy or unhealthy?
One of the main ingredients of marzipan is almonds - and they are healthy in moderation! Although almonds contain a lot of fat, they are essential fatty acids that have a positive effect on our health. For example, the regular consumption of almonds can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, our cholesterol level should benefit from moderate almond consumption.
In addition to almonds, however, marzipan is mostly made from sugar - and it's anything but healthy. Among other things, too high a consumption of sugar promotes the emergence of obesity. Due to the high content of fat and sugar, the calorie content of marzipan is also relatively high: 100 grams contain around 460 calories - almost as much as a bar of chocolate. The calorie content depends significantly on the quality of the product: the better the quality, the less sugar is included and the lower the calorie content.
In general, you should always consider products containing marzipan as a candy, which is allowed from time to time, but should not be part of the daily diet. If you like the taste of marzipan, try a marzipan or coffee with marzipan flavor. The hot drinks smell wonderfully like marzipan, but do not beat down on the hips.
Make marzipan yourself
You can buy marzipan raw material in many supermarkets, but you can also make the bulk yourself quickly and easily. All you need is the following ingredients:
- 250 grams of almonds
- 250 grams of powdered sugar
- ½ bottle of bitter almond flavor
- 30 milliliters of rosewater
Preparation: Put the almonds in a bowl and pour over boiling water. Let the almonds soak for five minutes and then peel off the skin. Dry the almonds and then grind them as finely as possible with a food processor. Add the remaining ingredients and knead well with each other. Store the finished mass in airtight packaging in the refrigerator.
Delicious recipe: baked apple with marzipan
Marzipan can be used to refine many sweets - very popular are, for example, baked apples with marzipan filling. For the production you need the following ingredients:
- 4 apples
- 60 grams of marzipan paste
- 40 grams of chopped almonds
- 150 milliliters of apple juice
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- Butter, powdered sugar and cinnamon
Cut a lid off the apples and remove the core. Coat the bottom of the lid with a little lemon juice. Now roast the chopped almonds in a pan until golden brown. After cooling, mix with marzipan, cinnamon, powdered sugar and butter. Then pour the mixture evenly into the four apples. Put the apples in a greased baking dish and pour over the remaining apple and lemon juice. Roast the apples in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 degrees.
