The implementation of a balanced child nutrition is often not so easy for Germany's mothers against better knowledge in practice. This is the result of the representative survey of 1, 000 mothers on child nutrition commissioned by TIGs Emnid. When it comes to child nutrition issues, mothers are commonly referred to as knowledgeable contact persons. As a manufacturer of frozen food products for the whole family, iglo is interested in what it really is about the nutritional competence of the mothers.
Are mothers sufficiently informed?
What are the chances of success in implementing a balanced diet in everyday life? For iglo, Opinion Research Institute Emnid asked 1, 000 mothers aged between 20 and 49 years. Accordingly, 89 percent feel sufficiently informed about a balanced diet for children. However, it is not always possible to put the theory into practice. The proportion of women who actually feed their child in a balanced way is just one
- 52 percent surprisingly low. If moreover
- 77 percent of respondents claim that they lead by example,
then, obviously, there is a discrepancy between one's own claim and its realization in reality. The interesting results of the survey also show what makes mothers fail in reality and which recipes for success circumvent the obstacles. In addition to a lot of exercise and a sufficient supply of the drink, a balanced diet also requires a full, nutritious diet. How do the respondents assess the care of their children, especially with the latter? Especially the consumption of fish differs in everyday life from the ideal.
- 45 percent of the girls and boys eat fish at least once a week.
- Sweets, on the other hand, are very popular: 69 percent of children snack more than once a day.
- Fruits and vegetables are less popular with kids: just 23 percent of mothers say that their child eats the five portions recommended by the German Nutrition Society every day.
So why is it that the good intentions of women in terms of nutrition often fall by the wayside?
What's the problem?
"My child just does not like certain foods" - says
- 49 percent almost every second mother. Many obviously want to avoid the "pickpocketing" on the plate because
- 76 percent of respondents pay attention to the wishes of their children when buying groceries.
As a result, health-promoting foods are rarely on the menu, as the survey reveals. If mothers consider the wishes of the offspring when shopping, the little ones eat less often fruits and vegetables (18 percent compared to 23 percent) and in particular less fish (30 percent compared to 45 percent). Moreover, it is not always in the hands of the mother what her child eats:
- 22 percent of women complain that they have no influence on meals in kindergarten or at school.
- Sometimes 12 percent simply miss the time to pay attention to the child's diet in between.
Paths to success - be a role model and enjoy
How can mothers teach their children what a balanced diet is and, most importantly, how to get the offspring to eat "healthy" food?
- Every fifth mother sometimes feels helpless and would like suggestions that help her.
- 89 percent wish that cooking and the topic of nutrition should be part of the school curriculum.
At least at home, the mothers have the solution in their own hands: If it is namely, children to enjoy the food, get used to even vegetable and fish muffle healthy food. The survey results speak for themselves:
- Eighty-five percent of the girls and boys who eat fish at least once a week have a mother for whom eating and trusting in food is particularly important.
Exemplary behavior in the consumption of fruits and vegetables is even more pronounced:
- 92 percent of mothers whose kids eat at least five servings of fruit or vegetables a day lead by example and enjoy the enjoyment of healthy food.
Nutrition to touch makes you fit
Another principle gives mothers hope that the more often children come into contact with food, the more likely they are to eat it. If the offspring pokes his nose in certain dishes, it is well worth starting a second and third attempt - perhaps with a child-friendly setup.
This simple principle not only promises success in eating. He can be experienced with all senses and in principle applicable to everyday nutrition. Whether shopping together at the retailer or in the supermarket, smearing while cooking or lunch break - regular participation and even create a hand trains the handling of our food. The children learn how each ingredient of a meal looks, smells, tastes and feels. The survey shows significant links between nutrition education and behavior:
- Eighty-five percent of children who eat enough fish are allowed to swing the wooden spoon at least once a week. Half of the children who only snack once a day are taken with them to shop and join
- 73 percent of kids who eat enough fruit and vegetables tell their mother where food comes from and how to use it.
The desire of many mothers to feed their children in a balanced way can only be partially realized in reality. The recipe for success: the children enjoy the conscious handling of food and actively involve them in everyday nutrition. If the shape of the food is still fun, the recipe is based on a healthy nutrient mix and it tastes good, then a step in the right direction is taken.
