Everybody knows worries and fears. This is part of normal life and is not really a pathological one. But this inner torment can get out of hand and become so severe that it significantly affects well-being and performance. Fear then becomes an independent disease. This is now medically secured.
In today's increasingly complex age, many people, including children, suffer from such exaggerated anxiety, often unconsciously. In studies and interviews, those patients who visit their family doctor because of an anxiety disorder, are among the front-runners.
Not every feeling of insecurity requires medical help from the pharmacy or expert psychological counseling. Once again it should be emphasized: The normal fear is a regular life function. It protects us from perceived dangers, forces us to be careful and thus reduces risks.
Worries about the workplace, the economic development, the future of the children, relatives and much more, despite all the stress, are nothing morbid, which in any case would require medical treatment or medical attenuation.
In addition to these completely normal moods, there are also states of anxiety that go far beyond the understandable and normal level. The fear then became independent and became its own clinical picture. This is by no means a rare phenomenon.
Experts estimate that about every sixth German citizen experienced conditions of such morbid fears requiring treatment at least once in his life. And the number seems to be increasing, also because of the current terrorist events.
Organic discomfort in anxiety
Often, even the person affected is not clear that the cause of the multifarious symptoms is actually an anxiety disorder. One suspects completely different, organic dysfunctions. Common symptoms of an anxiety disorder are:
- unexplained sweats
- strong dizziness
- hand tremors
- difficulty in breathing
- "Dumpling feeling" in the throat
- Inclination to ponder
- sleep disorders
- Loss of vitality
The heart can be completely healthy, a nervous disease or similar. Organ findings are not present in these cases of so-called primary anxiety disorders. Nevertheless, these are not "imaginary" disorders.
Significant impairments due to "soft" knees or legs, dizziness and dizziness, the feeling of being shaky or shaky, and a noticeable feeling of weakness with great timidity must also make one think of an anxiety disorder. Of course, these signs are not evidence of a treatment-related anxiety disorder.
Different forms of anxiety
Anxiety disorders can occur in different forms. It can be short-term anxiety attacks (panic attacks) that only last a few minutes and come back often. But it can also be a general, always present fear (generalized anxiety syndrome).
Especially traumatic events can be generalized anxiety as well as fear of being in cliffs, in crowds or the like. favor.
What can be done against pathological anxiety?
It would be wrong, with reproaches and a "tear yourself together!" to overcome such pathological anxiety. It is a disease, no mood or recklessness of those affected. Diseases need to be treated.
If the described symptoms or other symptoms of unclear cause occur and the anxiety darkens as it were the whole life feeling, you feel helpless at its mercy, then affected should first seek talks with trusted people. This can relatives and friends, but it can also be the same doctor.
Anyway, severe anxiety requires professional help from doctors or psychologists. With psychotherapeutic measures, but also with effective medicines, these fears and the most associated mood depressions (depression) can be treated.
A self-treatment by fleeing to alcohol or other mood-enhancing drugs would be wrong, which could even increase the fears.
