As the name implies, water ice is predominantly the main constituent of the human body: water. In addition, there are ingredients such as sugar, colors and flavorings. Due to the high water content, water ice hardly has any calories. Especially on hot summer days, water ice is popular as a pleasant refreshment. But if you want a quick and easy cooling, you do not have to buy an ice cream straight away. From the fruits of the season, water ice can be produced inexpensively.
Great taste with low calories?
Among the industrially produced ice creams, water ice is considered the lowest calorie ice cream. Despite its relatively high sugar content, the energy content of 100 grams of water ice is just 60 calories (kcal). For comparison: fruit ice cream contains more than twice, cream ice cream even three times as many calories. Although milk ice cream is rich in protein and calcium, it is characterized by a high fat content.
In any case, the milk sourced as a healthy source of calcium in ice cream is often replaced by low-grade vegetable fat or high-fat cream. For example, cream and cream varieties have a milk fat content of up to 18 percent. The consumption of such high-fat ice cream can cause complications such as heartburn and obesity.
Despite its high water and carbohydrate content, the low-fat sweetmeat is easier to digest than milk-based ice creams. However, water ice has no vitamins, proteins or fiber. Water ice is therefore fat but also low in nutrients. Since water ice may only have a maximum fat content of three percent, it turns out to be the seemingly lower dietary sin compared to milk ice cream.
Better to enjoy in moderation
However, the largest share of carbohydrates in water ice occurs in the form of sugar. Regular consumption of sweet cooling can cause tooth decay and obesity. Water ice should therefore be enjoyed only moderately, because it allows the blood sugar level to rise quickly. This increases the risk of developing diabetes.
Whether ice cream or water ice, who wants to save calories, should enjoy both desserts only in moderation and move a lot. Then, even without a guilty conscience, you can sometimes be sinned.
Make water ice yourself
If you want to enjoy home-made water ice, you can make it easily and inexpensively at home. The big advantage of the homemade preparation is that it does not need an expensive ice cream maker or elaborate recipe. Because in contrast to milk ice, water ice does not have to be stirred regularly.
The preparation of water ice is uncomplicated. To make yourself a tasty dessert, you need:
- commercial ice molds with stem
- a freezer
- some patience
Tips for preparation
Anything that tastes is allowed. All milk-free or water-based drinks such as ice tea, tea or fruit juices are suitable for the production. If you like it very well, you can, for example, bottle organic juices or smoothies.
An even fresher vitamin boost provides the juice of pureed fruit. Depending on the season, for example, freshly pressed citrus fruits or wild berries can be refined with a little honey, sugar or sweetener. The fruit cocktail must then only be placed in the freezer.
For this there are commercial ice molds made of plastic in all sorts of shapes and colors. The mostly cone-shaped or tongue-shaped collecting container is used to fill the fruit juice. After filling, the ice mold is covered with a counterpart. This lid has a handle on which the frozen fruit mix will adhere later. It takes about 24 hours for the homemade water ice to freeze.
If the ice can not be pulled straight out of the mold, just wait until the ice has thawed a bit. Then it is easy to remove and can be consumed immediately.
Water ice is unsuitable for diabetics
Low-fat and sugar-rich desserts such as water ice can be a health problem for diabetics. The water ice lacks the high fat content, as found in milk or cream ice cream. He ensures that the sugar absorption in the intestine is delayed. This ensures that the blood sugar level rises only very slowly.
In the case of water ice, the blood sugar level can rise unhindered due to the lack of fat. Diabetics should therefore necessarily compensate for the consumption of water ice with sufficient sport. In the case of acute hypoglycaemia, however, water ice can help bring the glucose content in the blood back to the right level quickly.
