Belching, called by doctors "Ructus", affects many people of all ages. It usually happens after enjoying a sumptuous meal. The most common cause of harmless regurgitation is greasy, sweet or carbonated foods and drinks. In rare cases, however, a serious illness can be the cause.

Belching - what is behind it?

The belching is first of all a sign that there is air in the stomach. When swallowing, a little air often gets into the digestive tract with the chyme. The swallowed air and gases from carbonated drinks then make their way out in the form of a burp.

The digestive process also creates air, especially if it is food that is difficult to digest, such as fatty roast, creamy desserts or fiber-containing raw salads. This air then escapes either upwards or downwards, in the latter case flatulence.

Heartburn - the acid regurgitation

Particularly unpleasant is the acid regurgitation, in which gastric acid enters the oral cavity (reflux) and is accompanied by burning chest pain (heartburn). This can happen to anyone at any time, without the need for immediate illness.

Only when heartburn occurs very frequently, when pain occurs regularly, or when changes in the esophageal mucosa are present, is it called a "reflux disease". The complaints are then typically increased by lying, alcohol, smoking and stress.

Evidence of pathological regurgitation

Frequent burping in itself is not dangerous. Discomfort are side effects such as foul bad breath, chest pain or nausea. Nocturnal heartburn can lead to sleep disorders. A constant feeling of fullness in turn can lead to weight loss.

If the mucous membrane of the esophagus comes into contact with the acidic gastric juice over a longer period of time, it can lead to pathological changes in the mucosal cells - even cancer cells can then develop.

In rare cases, the regurgitation may be an indication of a passage barrier of the gastrointestinal tract, for example a tumor. If it comes next to the regurgitation to swallowing or a weight loss, a doctor should be consulted to exclude a serious cause.

Change eating habits

In order to avoid increased air production, it may already be helpful to change your diet. Carbonated drinks such as beer, soda and cola bring potentially causal gases into the stomach. Foods that stimulate gas production should be consumed only moderately or not at all. These include raw salads, cabbage, onions, whole grains and legumes.

In addition, conscious and slow eating is recommended in order to swallow as little air as possible. Focus on the food and do not talk while chewing.

Aids and home remedies against constant belching

After eating, digestion can be boosted by exercise to prevent unpleasant burping. A digestive walk is better in this case than a nap for digestion. Suffering from acid regurgitation and chest pain, it helps to keep your upper body asleep when sleeping - for example with extra pillows.

Irritants such as alcohol, nicotine and especially greasy or sweet foods should be avoided in this case. Relief may also bring defoliant teas of cumin or fennel. If all this does not help or if pain occurs, a doctor should be consulted.
