Perception - deceptions and disorders

Because our perception is never 100% consistent with reality, the line of perception delusions or disorders is fluid. Thus we perceive colors, although the light itself is not colored, but has only different wavelengths, which are interpreted by the organ of sight and brain accordingly; For example, many animals perceive colors differently than humans.

Optical illusions and perception disorders

Although the line between optical illusions and perceptual disorders is fluid, there are differences:

  • Optical illusions as - normal - visual impressions that contradict the objective stimulus conditions, probably everyone knows. They result from the construction and functioning of the eyes, misinterpretations or misjudgments. For example, if you place a dot in the middle of six small dots and six large dots and look at these two pictures next to each other, the dot in the middle of the small dots will appear larger than the other picture. Another example is two parallel lines that appear curved when you place a beam grid between them.
  • Perception disorders, on the other hand, are the cause of - temporarily or permanently - limited or defective function of the sensory organ itself, the pathway or the brain. Typical examples are hallucinations - perceptions in which there is no external stimulus - for example, as a result of toxicity (alcohol, drugs), in physical illnesses (for example epilepsy) or mental illnesses (for example schizophrenia). The affected person realizes this perception. In pseudo-hallucinations, as they occur in sleep deprivation, for example, the affected person notices that he is hallucinating. In the case of delusions, there are real stimuli, but these are reinterpreted pathologically (for example, a random car horn is perceived as a personal signal).

In relation to the continuous stimulus from the environment, perceptual disturbances rarely occur - a sign of which masterful achievement our organism constantly performs.
