Summer fun in the water

It does not matter if you are on the coast or in your own country: In the summer, it's cool and wet. Everything about various water sports, from fishing to surfing. Water refreshed. But it has many more benefits. Because different waters from sea, river, lake to swimming pool offer countless recreational sports, which not only make fun, but also keep you fit. There is something for young and old as well as for every purse. If you have not planned your time during the big holidays or if you also feel like trying something new, you will get lots of tips and information for sports on, in, on or under water.


Windsurfing is one of the classic trend sports by the sea. Because it is feasible everywhere, where a fresh breeze blows. It claims pretty much all the muscles in the body, not only training strength but also the heart and circulation. The risk of injury is low, provided you surf technically correct. However, this is not easy, because the movements in windsurfing are complicated. Beginners should therefore take a course of at least 12 lessons. In contrast to most other speed sports, the body mass when windsurfing is not necessarily negative.

The windsurfing equipment consists of a board that should have as much volume (well over 200 kilos) for beginners - for stabilization on the water - and the sail rig, to which the surfer clings. Useful sets are already available from 1.000 Euro. The equipment can usually be borrowed by the day or by the hour.


When diving or snorkeling, the fun of exploring the underwater world is in the foreground. However, scuba diving at greater depths carries the risk of decompression, often referred to as "diving disease", in which gas bubbles form in the blood vessels as a result of too rapid emergence. This happens in Germany alone up to 1, 000 times a year. And it can be life threatening.

You should definitely visit a diving course, preferably at a school that works according to the guidelines of the Association of German scuba divers. The course costs about 400 euros. In addition to classic diving resorts in Egypt and Spain, there are also diving courses in swimming pools. A complete diving equipment with neoprene suit, bottle, glasses fins and other accessories will cost you more than 1, 500 euros. Snorkeling with a mask, snorkel and fins, on the other hand, can be purchased for about 50 euros.

Around the swimming pool

Hardly any other sport is said to have health benefits as favorable as swimming. It is especially recommended for those who are overweight and those with musculoskeletal disorders, as the weightlessness of the water reduces their impact on bones and joints. When breaststroke, however, it comes to hyperextension on the cervical spine, which is why some sports doctors advise to backstroke. If this is not possible in the full swimming pool, experts recommend exhaling in the water in order to maintain a neutral position at least during this phase.

Even more gentle for the musculoskeletal system is aquajogging, because this not only the gravity is lifted, but also the foot, knee and hip joints are moved in the linear directions of running. As basic equipment the "water runner" only needs a life jacket made of the plastic polyurethane and a swimming pool with at least 180 centimeters water depth. Courses for aquajogging are now offered in many swimming pools. You should not have more than ten members to give the facilitator the opportunity to have individual control. Especially recommended for overweight and joint problems.

Children often find the swimming pool particularly enjoyable jumping a springboard and diving tower. Classical diving not only trains the coordination, concentration and agility, but also the constructive handling of one's own fears. The risk of injury is low - even if the water can be quite hard when wrongly immersed. The point of contact for diving is the swimming club.
