Summer tan - self-tanner instead of solarium

We dream of it: summer, sun, vacation, relaxation, relaxation and brown summer skin. But as soon as the recovery after the vacation is gone, the summer tan is gone. And the attempts to keep the pleasant skin color often go nowhere. Actually, we Central Europeans would have to accept that the gold-bronze skin color is not our thing. Only those who go by their skin rather than Latino, can count on a longer-lasting tan. As a rule of thumb, if you have difficulty getting brown, your tan will go off just as quickly. On the other hand, you can do nothing - except with self-tanner to get a little "color on time".

Solariums promote skin cancer

Very clear: sunbeds are passé. The skin damage caused by UV rays is too intense, the radiation risk is simply too high. Dermatologists therefore warn against additionally and unnecessarily increasing the risk of skin cancer caused by solariums. An alternative is provided by the self-tanner, which tan without sunburn and skin aging.

Self-tanner instead of sunburn

The modern self-tanner are much more pleasant and compatible than the artificial sun from the socket. The tanning agent in the self-tanner is a synthetic sugar (DHA = dihydroxyacetone) from the chestnut shell, which reacts with the proteins in the horny layer of the skin and colors them. The color reaction begins immediately after applying the self-tanner and is completed in about 6 hours.

Because only the top layer of skin is tanned by the self-tanner, the tan often only three to five days, sometimes longer. At the latest after two weeks no effect can be seen.

The more DHA is contained in the self-tanner, the more intense the tanning. Most self-tanner contains about 2% DHA, turbo self-tanner brings it to about 5% DHA. The latest generation of self-tanner also contains the active ingredient erythrulose, another biotechnologically produced sugar. This combination provides a very natural skin tone, dries the skin less and the tan lasts longer.

Peeling against stains

Self-tanners are best applied in the morning after showering. By showering the excess fat was rinsed off and the skin gently peeled by showering and terrying. Dry skin cells can be removed with a body scrub or a loofah sponge, because on smooth skin, the color is particularly good. Especially elbows, knees and heels can quickly look "peevish" without peeling.

Self-tanner as cream, spray or gel

On the skin, the self-tanner works best when waiting with sports and other sweaty activities about three hours after application. Even showering or bathing soon after application endangers the sun look. Whether self-tanning cream, spray or gel is a matter of personal preference. Even as a self-tanning foam or self-tanning milk, the sun is out of the tube.

In any case, you should be careful to use for the face only a special facial self-tanner and no body tanner. The facial skin is still in need of care than the rest of the body's skin, and facial self-tanners are therefore specially tailored to these needs.

Self-tanner are not sunscreen

Since self-tanners dye only the top layer of skin, they are not a sunscreen. This tan does not protect you from the sun. However, almost all products now offer low levels of sun protection as part of consistent care against environmental influences. Nevertheless, you have to use a sunscreen with correspondingly high sun protection factor on holiday or just in strong sun!

Wear gloves when applying

Self-tanners have a high dyeing potential. Once the skin is tanned, wait for the next phase of cell renewal until the skin has regenerated and the stained skin cells are shed. Therefore, it is advisable to wear gloves to apply the self-tanner or, in any event, to wash your hands thoroughly immediately after application before the self-tanner dyes your palms.

Carrot and Co. are not an alternative

A healthy diet supports the vital look - always! But with a carrot cure or tomatoes in abundance, you risk only a yellowish skin color, which is reminiscent of jaundice. Even beta-carotene tablets are of no use to preserve the color of the summer.

Tips for applying self-tanner:

  • So that the tan is beautifully even, you should apply the self-tanner in small portions with a sponge. The first time a slightly tanned self-tanner is worthwhile. Its own color makes it easier to see where the browner has already been applied.
  • This avoids different areas of the body to be tanned to varying degrees because it was unconsciously rubbed in several times. This is especially important in such prominent places as elbows and knees, because otherwise they very quickly look much darker than the rest of the body.
  • Some body lotion as a primer before applying a very small amount of self-tanner ensures even tan at the problem spots. Eyebrows and hairline are left out, as the self-tanner otherwise gets stuck there and sounds unevenly.
  • After applying the self-tanner, you should wait about 30 minutes to get dressed until it is fully absorbed. This avoids stains on clothing. From silk and synthetic materials, self-tanner can only be removed badly.
