The therapy for scoliosis consists of several building blocks. Basically, it is about guiding the person concerned, how he can live with scoliosis as possible without impairment and what he can do, so that his situation does not worsen: Scoliosis is a chronic growth deformity, which usually progresses, if not by a therapy with appropriate Scoliosis exercises in everyday life is counteracted.
Scoliosis: therapy using several components
The introduction is usually mediated during in-patient therapy (outpatient for children under the age of seven). Thereafter, those affected must continue their own learning and consistently within the scope of scoliosis therapy. The following pillars contribute to this:
- Training the posture and its correction
- Training of body sensation and sensation of movement
- Training behavior in everyday life (possibly: instructing parents)
- If a scoliosis corset is needed, instructions on how to handle it
- Learning to deal with pain
These are all building blocks of Schroth Therapy - a holistic way to treat scoliosis at multiple levels. Again and again (from the age of three) the Dorn therapy is recommended to treat scoliosis. Although the efficacy of this gentle, side-effect-free method has not been scientifically proven, it is worth trying to support it in consultation with the doctor.
For decades recognized and proven is the "three-dimensional scoliosis therapy according to Schroth". This should begin as early as possible and builds on giving those affected opportunities to deal with scoliosis through active body and breathing work.
For this purpose, the above-mentioned modules are taught in various compositions and emphases - with or without equipment (sometimes also supported by the computer), in or out of the water, supported by water or electricity applications. The latter is also used for pain therapy, as well as additionally often offered relaxation exercises.
If a corset is necessary for the treatment of scoliosis (eg from a bend angle of 20 °), this is not only adapted, but also explained and trained how to deal with it.
Scoliosis surgery: methods
As a rule of thumb: scoliosis surgery is recommended when the angle of curvature is over 45 °. However, the decision is made individually. The aim is to straighten the spine and relieve pain and other discomfort in one. At best, scoliosis surgery can help prevent further curvature caused by scoliosis.
There are various surgical methods that are selected depending on the findings. It always uses a metal implant, which is usually not removed. Often, the spine must be additionally bony stiffened during scoliosis surgery to stabilize it.
Scoliosis: OP with risks
Like any procedure, scoliosis surgery also has many risks, both because of the procedure itself and because of the anesthesia; For example, bleeding, infections, wound healing disorders, nerve and organ injuries. The curvature can usually be greatly improved, but not completely reversed. Some scoliosis sufferers find stiffening in the lumbar spine area troublesome. In any case, the procedure with the attending physician must be discussed in detail, comparing the benefits and risks of the respective therapeutic methods for scoliosis.
