Would you save on your child's health? Hardly likely. However, thousands of euros are spent on the workplace of an adult without further ado; B. for a "child workplace" (= desk and chair) in schools a maximum of 250 euros to be invested. Accordingly, the equipment in the schools is not back-friendly. Even at home you rarely find workplaces that meet the ergonomic requirements. Even though children today are sitting more than ever before: about nine hours a day.
This neglect comes just in an age phase to bear in which generate sensitive growth processes and the spine for damage is particularly vulnerable.
- So it is not surprising that 48% of all 11- to 14-year-olds suffer from disorders of posture and 44% of all fourth-graders occasionally and 8% of fourth-graders even constantly complain of back pain.
- In addition, 43% of primary school children suffer occasionally and 12% constantly with difficulty concentrating.
Prevent postural damage
How this negative process can be stopped was examined in a four-year pilot study. A pupil-volunteer group tested the effects of a "movement-controlled teaching concept" on the orthopedic development of pupils. In addition to back-friendly furniture, such as height-adjustable tables and actively dynamic chairs, such a concept includes movement breaks and constant changes in the posture of the students.
The result of the study:
Compared to the control group, the subject group suffered significantly less postural damage. Not only in the medical-orthopedic examination, the study participants had clearly trained less deformities of the spine; they also performed better than the control group in the physical-motor areas such as strength, coordination, flexibility and concentration.
What does the ideal student workplace look like?
The pilot study clearly shows how important exercise and body-appropriate furniture is in the growth phase.
- The table and chair must be able to follow the constant growth of the adolescents and allow an easily applicable and wear-free height adjustment for all body sizes. Here, the chair must have properties that ensure a comfortable and back-friendly sitting.
- Ideally, the chair smoothly adapts to changing attitudes and at the same time encourages the student to change his postures frequently. This supports the natural movement impulses of adolescents - continuously and effectively.
In principle, you should make sure that the furniture is independently checked when selecting the right furniture. The Aktion Gesunder Rücken eV has been awarding back-friendly products with the AGR seal of approval for more than ten years. They must have demonstrated in advance their back-friendly construction in front of an independent review committee with experts from medicine and science.
The AGR seal of approval therefore serves as a serious guide for consumers when buying everyday ergonomic aids, such as office furniture, car seats, beds, upholstered furniture, shoes, bicycles, etc.
Children need exercise!
And another decisive hint! A healthy development of children and adolescents is only guaranteed if the growing organism has sufficient exercise and exercise opportunities. The younger the children are, the more everyday physical activity plays a crucial role in a balanced development of body, mind and soul. Physical and motor fitness deficiencies can not be solved or avoided by the most ergonomic student workstation!
