Multiple sclerosis - symptoms, diagnosis, course

MS symptoms vary greatly, ranging from mild signs to severe MS. The symptoms that occur depend on which areas of the nervous system are affected by the inflammation. Possible signs are blurred vision such as double vision, bladder weakness, tingling in fingers and toes; Vertigo also occurs frequently.

MS: Symptoms and signs

Ultimately, all areas of motor and sensor technology can be affected. MS symptoms may be similar to those of Lyme disease or brain tumor, but also to a herniated disc or circulatory disorders of the brain.

Typical symptoms of multiple sclerosis are physical disorders that develop within hours and days, caused by one or more new sites of inflammation. Such a MS boost usually resolves within weeks - the corresponding function recovers completely (in about 75 percent of cases) or residual defects remain as a result of scarring.

MS diagnosis and MS history

The frequency and severity of a thrust is very different, the MS course is difficult to predict. In some cases, only rarely occurs a boost, in about two-thirds of those affected worsen the body functions over the years, at 5 percent result from the MS severe disabilities.

MS diagnosis is not easy because of the variety of symptoms. The medical history (anamnesis) as well as the results of the physical examination and the technical analyzes are taken into account. Typically, the following technical analyzes are performed:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (= MRI)
  • evoked potentials (to check the function and conductivity of the nerves)
  • Examination of the nerve water (CSF)
  • Blood and urine tests

This diagnoses multiple sclerosis and eliminates other causes of the symptoms.
