More fiber, less weight!

A diet rich in fiber would save many people from gaining weight, according to the Society for Nutritional Medicine and Dietetics. A study published in the renowned American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that weight gain is associated with a low intake of fiber-containing whole grains but a high intake of white flour products.

Study on 74, 091 American Nurses

The researchers collected data from 74, 091 American nurses aged between 38 and 63 at the beginning of the study in 1984, who had no cardiovascular disease, cancer or diabetes mellitus at that time. The dietary habits of the study participants were surveyed in 1984, 1986, 1990 and 1994 with questionnaires on the frequency of consumption of various food groups. In addition, the scientists calculated the body mass index and the long-term changes in weight.

Women who consumed more whole grains consistently weighed less than women with lower intakes of whole grains. Regardless of the weight at baseline, the subjects with the highest fiber intake increased 1.52 kilograms less over the study period than those with the least increase in fiber intake.

High fiber intake - low weight increase risk

Overall, women with the highest fiber intake had a 49 percent lower risk of weight gain than those who consumed the least fiber. These findings underline the importance of differentiating between the importance of whole grains and white meal products for weight control, according to the responsible scientists.

Diminution of existing overweight

However, a high-fiber diet is not only an effective protection against obesity, but also a promising way to reduce existing excess weight. To increase the fiber intake, a change in diet towards the consumption of whole grains and plenty of vegetables and fruits is necessary. A further increase in the intake of filling fiber is possible through the use of fiber-containing medical products.More information: The Society for Nutritional Medicine and Dietetics advises weight loss by telephone on 0241-96 10 313.
