Athletics - Sports from ancient times

Every child comes more or less voluntarily into contact with athletics as a school sport. Once a year, students can prove their athletic ability at the national youth matches. Athletics usually only meets with moderate enthusiasm among schoolchildren - and it has always been the supreme discipline at the Olympics. The first Olympic Games to be attended today took place in 776 BC with just one discipline, the 192 meter long stadium run. The Stone Age people have already measured their physical abilities, for example in the form of races.

Athletics: Versatile and time-honored

The Athletics competition of modernity celebrated its birth on 5 March 1864, in England. On this day, teams from Oxford and Cambridge University competed against each other. Only two years later, the first national athletics competition took place with already twelve disciplines. When the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896, athletics had spread all over the world and is still the core Olympic sport.

Athletics is actually a collective term for different disciplines of running, jumping and throwing. These disciplines have undergone many changes over time. At the Olympic Games today 24 disciplines are held by the men and 23 by the women. Although there are also non-Olympic athletics disciplines - the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), founded in 1912, the umbrella organization of national athletics federations, recognizes, however, only standardized tracks for world records.

Decathlon and heptathlon for allrounders

Athletics training in childhood is still very broad. Depending on preferences and talents, however, the focus is on young people. For all-rounders, the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon are ideal. Athletes in these disciplines must have great versatility and endurance. Both competitions will be held on two consecutive days.

The decathlon consists of four running disciplines (100m, 400m, 1500m and 110m hurdles), three throw disciplines (shot put, discus and javelin) and three jump disciplines (long jump, high jump and pole vault) together. The heptathlon consists of three running disciplines (200m, 800m and 100m hurdles), two disciplines (shot put and javelin throw) and two jump disciplines (high jump and long jump).

Athletics: injuries and risks

Injuries due to outside influence, such as in team sports, are unusual in athletics. Because athletics is such a versatile sport, you can not really speak of typical athletics injuries. Instead, you have to differentiate according to the different disciplines, because the focus of the training here are set very different. However, all athletes should generally be careful to protect their joints to avoid injury. Training sessions include strength and endurance training.

It is especially important to have a thorough warm-up training geared to the most frequently used muscles to prevent bruises, cramps and strains. A strong hull and well-trained arms and legs are the basic requirements for a successful athlete. Most injuries in athletics arise in connection with fatigue and overwork, and technical errors can be the cause.
