Laughter as a therapy: laughter promotes good health

Laughter is a social glue

The positive effects of laughter also have to do with a social component. "Laughter is a social glue", says Carsten Niemitz from the Free University of Berlin. So, courtesy laughs when the supervisor tells a joke. You cover your own deficits with a dose of self-irony.

Or the affiliation to a group is crucial. For example, members of a travel group who do not know each other laugh significantly more frequently on the first day of the trip. Within the group it is classified as follows: Who laughs together, spends more time together, because of the same "wavelength".

Ability to laugh inborn

The Swiss researcher Willibald Ruch is convinced that the ability to laugh is innate. There are even people who do not make a face with a dose of nitrous oxide. Other scientists argue that laughter does not have to be learned. Toddlers can laugh up to 500 times a day.

Education and social constraints reduce laughter with age. "And did you know why women in personals always stress that they are looking for a man who should be humorous and funny?" the pool expert raises the question.

He sees the answer in an archaic pattern of human behavior. It says that women seek a man / father for themselves and their children that is strong, healthy, long-lived and peace-loving. That's the only way he can best provide for his family. "A man who likes to laugh and laughs satisfies this requirement, " says Heiner Uber with a wink.

Laughter as a therapy

Laughter has been used therapeutically in the US since the 1980s. In the meantime, there are also humorous visits with clowns in many European countries, which ensure that sick children can take life a little easier. With their colorful costumes, their games and magic they make sure that the little ones - but also staff and visitors - can forget about everyday life for a few moments and find comfort and hope.

But even in retirement homes, the use of funny visitors has proven itself. Above all, bedridden seniors and dementia patients are flourishing among the visitors. They show curiosity and joy again and find strength for communication. The social withdrawal is interrupted for some time.
