That laughter is healthy is more than an old folk wisdom. Scientists are confident that laughter improves lung function, oxygenates the brain, enhances immune defenses and reduces stress hormones. Why laughing is healthy
Laughter increases the concentration of immunoglobulin A in the saliva and in the entire pharynx-pharynx. The body's own antibodies repel bacteria and viruses that cause colds, coughs, sore throats, colds and flu.
Scientists at Loma Linda University, California, found that the production of endogenous killer cells increases significantly during laughter. Stanley Tan, endocrinologist, explains: "All of these neuro-hormones behave like an orchestra, each instrument plays a special note, laughter makes the entire orchestra more melodious or harmonic, in other words, laughter brings balance to all components of the immune system."
Laughter Yoga as medicine
Even baseless or even practiced laughter shows effect. Ilona Papousek, Professor of Neuropsychology at the University of Graz, had trained in laughter yoga for four weeks in her study with stroke patients and had measured significantly lower blood pressure values than in a comparison group.
The Indian physician Madan Kataria had developed in 1995 the Lach Yoga, also called Hasya Yoga. Certain techniques of deliberate baseless laughter are combined with Hatha Yoga breathing exercises.
In the Neurological Therapy Center in Cologne, the effects on patients with neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, stroke or Parkinson's are compared with those of patients who took part in a clown therapy.
