Holidays like Christmas or New Year's Eve, but also weddings, birthdays and many other occasions invite you to drink a glass of alcohol. Often, however, it does not stay with a glass and the next morning you wake up with a bad hangover: The head is roaring, the stomach is rumbling and the body is longing for water. We'll give you tips on how to avoid a hangover and what to do if you look too deeply into the glass.
The best tips against a hangover
The simplest - and the most conducive to health - tip to avoid a hangover is, of course, no or at least little alcohol to drink. However, if it gets wet and cheerful, you can use the following tips to avoid a hangover or at least alleviate the discomfort.
Tip 1: Do not drink on an empty stomach: Make sure you have a proper foundation before drinking. The best way to eat rich in fat - the fat is the alcohol absorbed more slowly in the blood and the alcohol level does not rise so fast. Even typical party snacks such as nuts, savory biscuits or cheese complicate the alcohol intake in the blood and can thus prevent a hangover.
Tip 2: Drinking a glass of water in between: If you drink a glass of water in between, you will ensure that the body is not drained too much. The blood stays thin and the risk of waking up with headaches the next morning decreases. Alternatively, a fruit spritzer can be drunk instead of water.
Tip 3: Avoid using alcohol (fusel alcohols): If you consume alcoholic beverages in large quantities, you should take special care that they contain only ethanol and not other alcohols. Begleitalkohole such as methanol or isobutanol are included for example in whiskey, dark rum or cognac and in wine. Although scientific proof is lacking, it is generally considered certain that starter alcohols are partly responsible for the cat the next morning. By the way, vodka is relatively free of accompanying alcohols.
Tip 4: Refrain from smoking: Do not smoke when drinking alcohol - this usually aggravates the headache the next morning. Because nicotine lowers the blood alcohol level and thus gives the feeling of being able to drink even more.
Tip 5: Avoid alcoholic drinks with sugar: Some alcoholic drinks, such as punch or mulled wine, contain a mixture of alcohol and sugar. Sugar, however, inhibits the degradation of acetaldehyde in the body. This degradation product of the alcohol is partly responsible for the hangover the next morning. Therefore, the hangover is often particularly bad after eating punch or mulled wine.
Anyone who fears in the evening that they should wake up the next morning hungover should drink a large glass of water before going to bed.
A painkiller before going to bed to prevent the hangover? This is usually not recommended because of possible interactions. For example, acetylsalicylic acid, which is popular in such cases, additionally attacks the gastric mucosa, which is already irritated by the alcohol.

Peppermint oil is a good substitute for combating headaches without a painkiller in a hangover. Due to the oil's scent, the muscles relax and the scalp is better supplied with blood - without stressing the stomach or liver. How a hangover arises
Headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness are typical symptoms that await us after a night of drinking the next morning. When we drink alcohol, it enters the bloodstream via the digestive tract and is then distributed throughout the body. In this way, the alcohol is also transported to the brain, where it influences the information transfer between the nerve cells. This leads, inter alia, to impaired perception and concentration as well as reduced responsiveness.
The alcohol also inhibits the body's vasopressin hormone. This hormone is responsible for the recovery of water from the primary urine. The inhibition of vasopressin leads to a drainage of the body - that is, the body excretes more water. Water loss causes the blood to thicken, causing irritation to the meninges and headaches the next morning.
Together with the water, more and more minerals are eliminated, so that the excessive consumption of alcohol can also lead to disturbances in the mineral balance. In addition to the high water loss, the hangover symptoms are also caused by the toxic degradation products of the alcohol - especially by acetaldehyde - caused.
