Holidays like Christmas or New Year's Eve, but also weddings, birthdays and many other occasions invite you to drink a glass of alcohol. Often, however, it does not stay with a glass and the next morning you wake up with a bad hangover: The head is roaring, the stomach is rumbling and the body is longing for water. We'll give you tips on how to avoid a hangover and what to do if you look too deeply into the glass.

The best tips against a hangover

The simplest - and the most conducive to health - tip to avoid a hangover is, of course, no or at least little alcohol to drink. However, if it gets wet and cheerful, you can use the following tips to avoid a hangover or at least alleviate the discomfort.

Tip 1: Do not drink on an empty stomach: Make sure you have a proper foundation before drinking. The best way to eat rich in fat - the fat is the alcohol absorbed more slowly in the blood and the alcohol level does not rise so fast. Even typical party snacks such as nuts, savory biscuits or cheese complicate the alcohol intake in the blood and can thus prevent a hangover.

Tip 2: Drinking a glass of water in between: If you drink a glass of water in between, you will ensure that the body is not drained too much. The blood stays thin and the risk of waking up with headaches the next morning decreases. Alternatively, a fruit spritzer can be drunk instead of water.

Tip 3: Avoid using alcohol (fusel alcohols): If you consume alcoholic beverages in large quantities, you should take special care that they contain only ethanol and not other alcohols. A painkiller before going to bed to prevent the hangover? This is usually not recommended because of possible interactions. For example, acetylsalicylic acid, which is popular in such cases, additionally attacks the gastric mucosa, which is already irritated by the alcohol.

Typical for a hangover breakfast are a high fluid intake and a particularly high fat and protein-rich diet. However, depending on how you feel, you should decide for yourself what and how much you eat.

Together with the water, more and more minerals are eliminated, so that the excessive consumption of alcohol can also lead to disturbances in the mineral balance. In addition to the high water loss, the hangover symptoms are also caused by the toxic degradation products of the alcohol - especially by acetaldehyde - caused.
