Hemp oil and camelina oil

It's not the weather, the genes or the lifestyle. The reason why Eskimos and Japanese are much less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease than Europeans is their diet. Because of their fish-rich diet, they consume significantly more omega-3 fatty acids and thus protect their heart. However, if you want to be like the Asians, you do not have to put fish on the menu every day. It is quite sufficient to include two almost forgotten types of oil in the domestic spice rack: hemp oil and camelina oil deliver quite a lot of precious fat.

Hemp oil and camelina oil: effect with omega-3 power

Both hemp oil and camelina oil have a high content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In contrast to other vegetable oils, they are characterized by a particularly advantageous ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fats. This results in positive effects on blood lipid levels, blood circulation and the heart. In addition, hemp oil and camelina oil can protect against thrombosis and sudden cardiac death and help with high blood pressure and chronic inflammation.

Incidentally, hemp oil does not have an intoxicating effect, unlike hashish oil. While hashish oil is derived from the resin of the hemp plant, which contains a relatively large amount of THC, hemp oil is made from the seeds in which no appreciable amounts of THC are contained.

Camelina oil and hemp oil in the kitchen

Most common edible oils are more neutral in taste. They usually serve as frying fat or as the basis of a salad dressing. The situation is very different with hemp oil and camelina oil, which are made cold pressed and thus have their own, typical taste. Camelina oil is characterized by a pea-scented, meadow-scented smell and slightly spicy taste. However, compared to linseed oil, camelina oil is much milder. Hemp oil, on the other hand, tastes herbaceous to nutty.

Due to their natural taste, both oils are an interesting addition to salads, raw vegetables, potato dishes, sauces, spreads and pesto. Neither camelina oil nor hemp oil should be heated above 165 ° C, as the fatty acids break down when the heat is strong and the taste of the oil changes. For frying and frying the oils are therefore unsuitable. However, they can be used for steaming and steaming. For storage, they should be stored cool and dark. Open linseed oil spoils quickly and lasts only six to eight weeks. Hemp oil, on the other hand, can be used for a good nine months even after opening.

Cosmetics: Skin care with hemp oil and camelina oil

Hemp oil and camelina oil care not only from the inside, but are also used in cosmetics. Due to their high content of α-linolenic acid, the two oils maintain skin and hair and are therefore popular components of creams, lotions, soaps and cosmetics. Also suitable as a massage oil, shampoo or skin care treatment, the oils, because they have a natural plasticizer.

The oil can be pressed both cold and hot, with cold-pressed hemp oil is usually higher quality and healthier. Hemp oil in organic quality is usually made cold pressed. Camelina oil is extracted from the seeds of the Leindotters and is therefore not to be confused with linseed oil, which is made of flax. Cold pressed, both oils have a strong yellow color. Hot-pressed hemp oil, however, is rather greenish.

Recipes with hemp oil and camelina oil

A simple hemp oil recipe is spaghetti with hemp oil and tomato sauce. To do this, cook a packet of spaghetti with a pinch of salt al dente. In the meantime fry a diced onion and a pressed clove of garlic in a pan in 2 tbsp. Hemp oil. Now put a pack of strained tomatoes in the pan and heat gently. Season with salt, pepper and basil. Put the finished spaghetti in a sieve and drain off the water. Then immediately pour the pasta back into the pan, add a dash of hemp oil and stir. Now arrange the spaghetti with the tomato sauce on two plates.

From camelina oil can be prepared by recipe easily a delicious dressing, which fits colorful summer salads. To finely chop a small chili pepper and a clove of garlic. Put into a bowl together with ten tablespoons of camelina oil and five tablespoons of balsamic vinegar and mix with a fork. Now add one tbsp of hot mustard and one tsp of honey. Season with salt and pepper, stir. Wash the salad and vegetables as desired, chop and place in a salad bowl. Fry a handful of pine nuts in a non-oil coated pan. Add the seeds together with the dressing over the salad, mix and serve.
