Grapefruit juice makes tablets look stronger

It does not always have to do with regular intake (morning, noon, evening) whether tablets work well and correctly. Since they are often and for convenience taken with meals, it is also important whether they are taken before, during or after the meal, or whether the stomach should be empty at the time of ingestion. And that's not all: It also depends on what we eat and how much we drink or what we should not eat and should not drink.

Always take the tablets with water

Tablets, dragees or capsules should always be taken with a large glass of water. Alcohol is not a suitable drink when taking the drug, because many active ingredients from the field of psychotropic drugs, sleeping pills and tranquilizers are more uncontrollably stronger when taken with alcohol.

Interactions with food

Intake of the antibiotics tetracyclines and gyrase inhibitors with milk or with other foods or medicines containing calcium, magnesium or iron will reduce their intake. Iron tablets should only be swallowed with water. Other beverages such as black tea, coffee, milk and fruit juices hinder the absorption of iron.

Grapefruit juice leads to higher levels of the drug in the blood after taking calcium channel blockers that are taken for high blood pressure - it also has a stronger effect.

Food as accelerator

Other remedies improve their intake when taken with certain foods: spironolactone or phenytoin, along with high-fat foods, are absorbed more quickly and completely.

Beta-adrenergic blockers like propranolol are the other way around - it's less absorbed. Certain anti-depressants (so-called MAOIs), together with cheese or other foods that contain tyramine, can cause extreme drops in blood pressure.

Right time of tablet intake

Always ask your doctor what time you should take the medicine: before, during, or after your meal. For a number of medicines, the time of use is important: For example, the anti-tuberculosis rifampicin and isoniazid are delayed after eating and only ingested to a limited extent. The same applies to the beta-blocker celiprolol. These medicines should therefore always be taken on an empty stomach.

It therefore depends on the right time and the right type of medication. Inquire urgently in the doctor's office or in the pharmacy, so that it does not come because of the wrong intake to side effects.
