Mites, ozone, mercury or mold - these and other pollutants can have a significant impact on the quality of life and thus also on health.
By breathing and sweating, but also bathing, showering or cooking, we produce steam. A four-person household generates around 10 liters per day! The water is invisible in the apartment as water vapor. A hygrometer can be used to check the relative humidity of the room. It should be between 30 and 65 percent. If the moisture settles on cold walls, mold threatens. Here only regular airing helps, several times a day. Ventilation ensures that not only a temperature compensation takes place, but above all suspended dust, pollutants and moisture are removed from the apartment.
Ventilating the rooms
Everybody consumes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, water vapor and heat to the environment. If several people are in one room, the air is consumed very quickly. Spent air, however, reduces the concentration, triggers headaches, leads to allergies. Ventilation removes pollutants and carries moisture outside. Dry, cool fresh air can absorb newly formed moisture. Cross-ventilate 3-4 times a day: open a window and one opposite, for 1-5 minutes.
Devices up to the year of construction 1976 contain asbestos-containing components in many cases. If the equipment is intact, there is no health risk to the operation since the core stone supports and the insulation - which used to be made of asbestos-containing materials - are normally not connected to the ventilation duct. In case of uncertainty: select serial number, year of manufacture and type designation and ask the manufacturer.
Ozone is a compound that consists of three oxygen atoms ("normal" molecular oxygen - O2 - is diatomic.) The chemical formula is O3. Ozone is not only produced on hot summer days, but electrical discharge can also produce ozone on laser printers and copiers It irritates the mucous membranes and impairs their performance Air well, do not place equipment in poorly ventilated niches.
Not just pulling out the chemical club - scrubbing often already helps and is more environmentally and health friendly. If it should ever be necessary, Caution: Never use or mix different cleaning agents at the same time. The active ingredients of the cleaning agents can react very violently with each other or even deadly substances can arise. On the label of many everyday cleaning agents one finds danger symbols and safety instructions. They are intended to alert the user to the potential hazards that may arise when using the product. Keep cleaning supplies childproof!
The most commonplace home improvement is violating sharp or pointed objects (44%); every fifth accident collides with objects (21%). Third place is followed by the crash accident with 17 percent.
Tips: Wear firm shoes, strip off rings, tie hair together and put on gloves. Where dust and chips fly: Put on protective goggles. A dust mask protects against dust from wood, paint, plaster, cement. Important: Observe safety measures when handling machines and processing instructions for building materials and perform all work in peace.
The spores of molds are a common cause of allergenic reactions indoors (eg apartment). Mold fungi thrive on all organic matter in the house. These include wood and walls as well as plastics. Molds need a specific climate to thrive. They like to have it warm and humid. If the wall, the ceiling, the window frames are damp, fungal fungal spurs settle around. Structural deficiencies, condensation and incorrect housing behavior, such as incorrect heating and ventilation can be the cause of mold.
Remove mold: mold must be removed. Never scrape off, spurs would be whirled through the whole room. Ventilate frequently, insulate thermal bridges and replace contaminated materials. In case of low infestation, rubbing the surface with 80% alcohol or alcohol helps, as alcohol removes moisture from the fungus. In case of major infestation, always consult a qualified specialist company.
Plasticisers can not only escape from carpets, but also from wallpaper. We recommend wallpaper made of cellulosic base materials, unprinted, single-layered and without coating. Nature is also not always healthy: wallpapers made of natural fibers such as wool, jute, sisal, cotton are laminated with polyethylene; this deteriorates the vapor permeability of the wall. Problematic for allergy sufferers: A lot of dust settles on natural fibers.
The Blue Angel, the best-known eco-label, points to environmentally friendly and low-emission products. If used correctly, no or only a minor adverse health effect will result from them.
Volatile Organic Compounds - VOC
VOC stands for "volatile organic substances" - they can be found in every apartment today. VOCs are different natural and synthetic substances that outgas at room temperature from furniture, products or interiors. So z. As paints, glue in carpets, vinyl wallpaper, but also lemon fragrance as a natural component of some woods. In contrast, SVOCs are low volatility organic substances that outgas over a longer period of time.
It is often difficult to ascertain whether a health risk is associated with the individual compounds - especially since there are a number of such substances in the individual rooms. For renovations or new purchases of furniture, it therefore makes sense to resort to low-emission and low-emission products.
Drinking water quality is generally exceptionally good in Germany. One factor that still influences the quality of the water today are the pipe systems of the individual houses. Lead piping systems must be used with caution, because lead is highly toxic. Always let water run until it flows evenly and coolly out of the tap.
It is good to choose low-emission paints and paints. If low-emission wall paints are declared with the "Blue Angel", they do not give any or hardly hazardous substances during and after processing, such as: B. hardly volatile or low volatility organic compounds from the room air. Suitable for allergy sufferers is the preservative-free interior paint based on dispersion.
Caseinfarben are watery emulsion paints containing milk protein (casein) as a binder. The natural color is suitable for inside and outside, can be disposed of easily, is even compostable. Painting works best in the summer months, so that the paint can dry well. After painting always ventilate well and leave the room once.
