Cancer patients who have completed their medical therapy are looking for ways to prevent a new outbreak. With a balanced diet, they can strengthen the body and protect against further cancer.

    Helplessness after the therapy

    Are chemotherapy, radiation or hormone therapy finished, many sufferers fall into a so-called therapy hole. Usually, they only receive the advice of their doctor to "live on normally". This statement is more likely to skepticism and discomfort for most sufferers than it really helps them. It is therefore no wonder that patients accept tips from relatives, friends or self-appointed specialists. The disease causes many doubtful helpers to try to financially exempt those with baseless promises. Healthy mistrust is the order of the day.

    Self-proclaimed nutrition experts always recommend so-called cancer diets. Sometimes one hears about the possibility to feed or starve the tumor. From a scientific point of view, both views are so far completely unfounded and in the case of the alleged "starvation of cancer" can also be life-threatening. The cancer cells get their necessary nutrients completely independent of the nutrition of those affected.

    Proper nutrition protects and strengthens

    Both the cancer itself and the therapy have greatly weakened the body. Now he has to recover and build up new reserves. With a balanced diet, cancer patients give their body everything it needs for the recovery phase. Although there is no diet that can definitely prevent cancer, recommendations can be made that at least reduce the risk of cancer.

    As protection factors, a number of substances that are found in food are discussed. Antioxidants, for example, protect our body cells from the so-called free radicals or inhibit their formation. Due to their damaging effect, free radicals can promote the development of cancer. In a balanced diet, according to the opinion of international professional societies sufficient amounts of vitamins and antioxidants are included. Such a diet looks like this:

    • Every day about five times fruit and vegetables.
    • Daily 600 to 800 grams of cereal products, potatoes, legumes or other foods.
    • Alcohol is not recommended.
    • Ensure a sufficient amount of drinking: At least two liters of low-calorie drinks should be.
    • The meat consumption of red meat (beef, lamb, pork) is best limited to a maximum of three times a week.
    • Limit the consumption of fatty foods as much as possible. Prefer vegetable oils.
    • Avoid salted foods.

    Dietary supplements such as vitamin supplements are usually not necessary in cancer aftercare. Uncontrolled high doses or certain ingredients such as iron may even be harmful to health and carcinogenic.

    Avoid malnutrition

    As a result of cancer therapies, especially in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, there is sometimes prolonged loss of appetite and pronounced aversion to certain foods.

    An important goal after completed cancer therapies is to "pimp" those affected again. Patients should therefore always follow their individual tastes and prepare their desired food.

    In order to gain weight, they can also quietly resort to high-calorie foods: creamy milk shakes can be better in this situation than herbal teas and the vegetables may be refined with butter.
