Every fifth child and every third teenager in Germany is too fat. Being overweight is one of the biggest risk factors for diabetes mellitus type 2 and many children will not be able to get rid of the bacon later. Especially sweet toothed, but also fast food fans run the risk of becoming chubby with excessive consumption and little movement. Parents should not completely forbid their offspring from snacking, but offer them better calorie-reduced alternatives.
Because when the cravings accumulate in the kids, the danger of uncontrolled secret snacking is great. Allowing children to eat sweets at a healthy rate every now and then is better than asking them secretly from their grandparents in duplicate.
More exercise and nutrition education
Movement brings, because that comes in most too short. Whether cycling, climbing, playing soccer or frisbee in the meadow. Children must once again discover the joy of movement and make their leisure time more active.
Most dangerous for the child figure are nibbling habits in front of the TV. Chips, peanuts and cheese crackers are true calorie bombs. Popcorn or pretzel sticks, on the other hand, are almost fat-free. Many parents also misjudge the calorie content of juices and sodas. Slimmer for the figure and healthier for the teeth is to quench your thirst with mineral water or juice spritzers. Parents are urged to act, otherwise the fat children of today will be the early retirees of tomorrow.
Tips for healthier children
- Waiver does not have to be! It is better to offer low-calorie snack alternatives. Gummy bears, fruit gums, chocolate kisses, pretzel sticks, popcorn, rice waffles or home-made cereal bars are less rich in fat.
- Parents should be role models for their children and demonstrate a healthy diet and lifestyle.
- Bake cakes and cookies together with the kids instead of buying. You can make almost any recipe lower in fat.
- Instead of "whole" bars chocolate better "minis" or bars buy.
- In between gift vouchers for sporting activities with the whole family (zoo visit, ice skating ...) give away.
Weight loss under medical supervision
Sven-David Müller, spokesman of the Society for Nutritional Medicine and Dietetics in Bad Aachen, strongly recommends targeted weight loss programs (eg the OPTIFAST Junior program) and to turn to specialist clinics (eg the adiposity rehab center INSULA).
The doctor-led weight loss program Optifast-Junior for adolescents includes not only dietary advice but also behavioral and exercise therapy as well as medical care. As part of an 18-week intensive care, young people learn new nutrition strategies and the importance of regular physical activity. The long-term program looks after doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and nutritionists.
