Foot reflexology massage for pain

An image of the body and its organs on the soles of the feet? Scientifically, this has not been proven - yet many patients swear by the foot reflexology. It should have a beneficial effect on the internal organs and possible disturbances. A study in knee osteoarthritis gives hope. Learn more about foot reflexology.

Feet as a mirror of the body

Feet are a high-performance means of transportation, as they carry us about four times around the world in an average healthy life, they complete 10, 000 steps every day - the feet of joggers and dog owners, of course, do a lot more. And they are a mirror of all possible organs - the liver, spleen, heart, joints and muscles are mirrored in small format on their sole. At any rate, many people are convinced that a massage of the feet is good for them.

On the soles of the feet, it is said, there are certain zones, of which there are solid connections (namely reflex paths) to the other body regions. Like on a map, all organs on the soles of the feet should find each other again. Anatomically, however, there is no evidence for this assumption. As a rough classification applies: The toes reflect the head and neck, the metatarsal thorax, ankles and heels of the stomach and pelvis again.

A pressure massage - acupressure - has been used in China and other countries for several thousand years as a cure. The feet are particularly suitable for this because they can be used to trigger effects in the entire organism, since numerous nerve tracts connect them to the other regions of the body.

Reflex zones of the left and right half of the body

The modern form of foot reflexology goes to the American ENT doctor. William Fitzgerald back. He got to know the method through Native American folk medicine and developed it further. In the 1830s, masseuse Eunice D. Ingham took up the concept and expanded it.

By means of a pressure point massage of the corresponding places on the foot, the internal organs and possible disturbances of their function should be able to be influenced via the reflex paths mentioned. The organs of one half of the body are located on the sole of the corresponding right or left foot.

Special grip technique

The massage is considered useful for rheumatism, circulatory problems, migraine, digestive problems and metabolic diseases as well as tension and allergies. Using views and buttons, the therapist creates a finding based on the reflex zones. He examines the soles of the feet for deformities, swellings or skin changes. A special grip technique shows hardened or painful reflex zones, which point to disturbances in the body.

It is treated predominantly punctually, for example by dynamic up-and-down movement of the thumb and the other fingers. The nerve endpoints on the foot conduct the stimulus via the sciatic nerve to the spine, from where the signals are forwarded to the individual organs. The impulses can lead to an initial aggravation of the symptoms - in natural medicine almost always an indication that the self-healing powers are mobilized.

Health insurance companies do not pay for treatment

Even if the health insurance companies do not pay for a foot reflexology massage, they nevertheless value it positively. The AOK writes about this. "The conception of reflex zones in the body is not unknown in classical naturopathy: A reflex zone includes all organs and tissues that are supplied by the same nerve fiber bundle exiting the spinal column. Since these fibers all run together in a central location near the spinal column (a ganglion), internal organs can be affected by skin irritation in a reflex zone, for example. "
