Diet in gout

Many people with overweight suffer from gout, but also lean can hit the metabolic disease. How is gout and how can diet be improved?

What is gout?

Gout (uricopathy) is a metabolic disease. In the process, uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints because other "filter organs" such as the kidney or the liver no longer function properly.

How is gout?

When the kidneys stop working, uric acid can no longer be excreted. Either there is a disturbance of the purine metabolism or too much uric acid is produced (less often). But diminished kidney activity can also have other causes, such as other diseases that increase uric acid levels.

For example, diabetes is a disease that can cause kidney dysfunction. But also excessive and regular alcohol consumption can damage the kidneys.

How does gout express itself?

The joints hurt when touched and moving. In addition, affected areas swell, turn red and heat up. It can also cause fever and headache.

What can you do with diet for gout?

With diet you can reduce the gout, even if the causes (disturbance of Purinstoffwechsels, increased uric acid production) have nothing to do with the personal diet. Alcohol should be avoided in any case, especially on beer, because this stimulates the production of uric acid with its high purine content.

Other foods with a high purine content should be avoided in gout, for example:

Protein-containing foods usually also contain a lot of purine, while dairy products and eggs are almost purine-free. You should cover its protein needs so primarily with quark, yogurt, cheese, buttermilk, whey, cream cheese, eggs and egg dishes and less with meat and fish.

Fat causes more ketone bodies in the body, which reduce the uric acid degradation. Therefore foods with a high fat content should be avoided. However, healthy essential fats such as olive oil, fish oil (from fatty sea fish) or nuts should be eaten from time to time (at least 1-2 times a week).

On innards such as liver you should completely abstain from gout. In addition, you should daily drink a lot of low-calorie liquid: 2-3 liters of water or herbal tea are particularly good. Those who are overweight should reduce this with the help of a diet. Normal weight is always good for gout and can also improve other illnesses (diabetes, hypertension).
