Iron deficiency in pregnancy

During pregnancy, the energy requirement is low, but the nutrient requirement is sometimes doubled. That means: class instead of mass! Only by the diversified consumption of food with high nutrient density and the largely renouncement of "empty" calories the claim in the pregnancy is to be taken into account.

Iron deficiency in pregnancy: how to prevent?

Ferrous foods are mainly meat and meat products. Iron is also present in foods of plant origin. However, it can be used much worse than animal iron. The additional intake of vitamin C increases the utilization of plant iron. It is advisable to drink a glass of orange juice before eating or to combine the meal with foods rich in vitamin C.

Iron content: food with a lot of iron

Vegetable foods high in iron are green vegetables, legumes and wholemeal bread. That spinach should contain a lot of iron, is a nurse's tale. The regular intake of iron can be hindered by certain substances. These include oxalic acid, which is found in rhubarb and spinach, alginates in custard powder and pasty soups, tannins in coffee and black tea, and phytic acid as an ingredient in rice and soybeans. Also, antibiotics and antacids (gastric acid neutralizing substances) impede iron absorption. Note: To cover the increased demand for iron, a meat supplement should be on the menu twice a week. Because of the low fat content, beef and lean poultry are to be preferred. Further iron supplementation can be achieved by having two fish meals a week.

Iron deficiency in pregnancy: what to do?

In principle, iron deficiency must be examined by a doctor to treat and eliminate the cause. This is especially true during pregnancy, after blood loss during childbirth and during breastfeeding. Based on the laboratory findings of the blood on hemoglobin, red blood cells, iron, ferritin and transferrin the diagnosis is made. In addition, examination of the stool for blood and an iron resorption test (intestinal upset) may confirm the diagnosis. The iron concentration in the blood is measured before and two hours after taking an iron tablet. If necessary, the doctor prescribes an iron supplement, which is taken mainly as a tablet on an empty stomach before eating. About side effects of iron substitution such as black staining of the stool, possibly nausea or constipation should be discussed in detail with the gynecologist. In most cases, prevention of iron is recommended during pregnancy.
