Just start: walking is healthy

Why just "walking"?

Walking is the most original and natural way of getting around. Traveling long distances on foot has been part of everyday life for millennia. Sports specialist Klaus Völker calls it "a cultural technique that is available to everyone".

In the meantime, walking has become unfashionable. Wrongly. Because it is the easiest of all locomotion. If you go, you do not have to make a big effort. It's as easy as breathing. If you want to go, you can just start. A few steps on foot can always be incorporated in everyday life.

We are doing our body a great favor. After all, it's a little marvel of muscle, tendon and bone and nothing better set up than to be in motion. You can always walk: young or old, alone or in company, at any time and in any place. You do not need expensive sportswear or equipment, no fixed training ground and no fees or entrance fees.

Why is walking healthy?

Walking trains our organism, for example, we absorb up to ten times more oxygen when walking briskly than at rest. But walking also helps to relieve pent-up stress. In stressful situations the body works at full speed. The muscles are tense, increased blood circulation and oxygenation, hormones such as adrenaline or cortisol released more. The body is so prepared to tackle the challenge.

This body's alarm response was once necessary for survival in order to survive in dangerous situations such as attacks. Although we still experience stressful situations today, we barely have to run for our lives. This means that the energy provided is no longer consumed automatically. Those who are physically active, provide for a balance.
