Ligament extension in the ankle joint

Stretching the ligaments in the ankle joint is one of the most common sports injuries. If, for example, the foot buckles when jogging or gets kicked off in football, it is not uncommon for ligaments to stretch. This can occur both in the upper ankle - the connection between the tibia, calf and talus - as well as in the lower ankle joint. The lower ankle forms the jump, the heel and the navicular.

If there is a ligament extension in the ankle, it is usually a violation of the outer ligament. Because when the foot kinks, the outer foot edge lowers and the inner foot edge rises - the result is an expansion of the outer bands. Typical symptoms of ligament distension in the ankle are pain when moving the foot and a slight swelling of the ankle. Whether the outer ligament in the ankle is torn or not, the doctor can check with the so-called unfolding test. He tests whether the foot can be opened outwards - if this is the case, there is probably an outer-band tore.

For the treatment of ankle ligament extension, tapes are available which ensure that the normal function of the joint is maintained. Special supportive bandages for the ankle also serve the same purpose. In order to reliably avoid another kinking, it is also possible during the healing process to resort to a fixed splint that can be fastened around the ankle joint.

Ligament extension in the knee

Knee extension in the knee can be caused by strong rotational movements that stretch the ligaments beyond the normal range of motion. An overexpansion in the knee as well as a blow or kick on the extended knee joint can also cause a ligament strain. Ligament injuries in the knee are especially common in sports such as football or skiing.

There are numerous ligaments in the knee joint - the inner and outer ligaments and the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. During exercise, strains and ligament tears can occur on all four ligaments. Typical symptoms of ligament injury in the knee are pain and instability of the joint. Injury to the inner ligament can also cause pain in the thigh.

With a ligament injury in the knee, a ligamentous stretch and a torn ligament are often difficult for a layman to distinguish, as a ligament rupture rarely forms a bruise. Therefore, to avoid a severe ligament injury, it is always advisable to consult a doctor for pain in the knee. This can restrict the injury by different stability tests more exactly.

If there is only an extension of the ligaments, the joint remains stable in these tests, as opposed to a ligament tear. Treating a ligament stretch in the knee by much rest and wearing a bandage: This stabilizes the joint additionally and relieves the ligaments.

Ligament extension in the finger or wrist

Band stretching in the fingers or wrists often involves ball sports such as volleyball or handball. If a ball is hit unfortunate, it can quickly lead to more severe injuries in the finger joint.
